The Company of Ghosts A beautiful, haunting ghost story from a Carnegie award winning writer of young adult fiction It was a seascape, moody with rocks and cliffs and wild showers of spray Ellie s own reflection was drawn into it, like a ghost image among the lights and shadows That s our island, Morag said It looks mysterious It is That s where we re going tomorrow Ellie is excited to be going with Morag s family to their beautiful island, but when she finds herself abandoned there, things begin to change Footsteps, shadows, strange lights, a haunting song and she becomes aware that she is not really on her own Lovely, haunting story packed with detail that puts you there on the island At its heart it s about how Ellie is coping or not coping with her parents divorce and her dad s move miles away from Scotland to Cornwall But it s rich with other detail too her painting, the island ghost s story and heartbreak, her developing friendship with George, her strength, courage and resourcefulness, surviving alone on the island. Company of Ghosts is a ghost story for young adults set on a deserted island off the coast of Scotland The ghost story has a traditional feel to it and is creepy rather than scary, the ghost benevolent and looking for peace I liked the spookiness and loved the descriptions of the lonely island etting, although the young heroine was a bit of a wimp on occasion I m not the intended type of reader for this genre Had I read this as a young teenager, I would have enjoyed it muchOn occas Company of Ghosts is a ghost story for young adults set on a deserted island off the coast of Scotland would still have been a wimp I was really hoping that this book would turn out to be as amazing as Say Her Name I shouldn t have went in with such high hopes Not much happens in the book You need to wait until halfway through the book for the ghost to even come into the book The plot just seemed to be about a girl who had mummy and daddy issues, who went to an island with a girl s if I remember her friend falls dangerously ill will a mysterious illness which was never even explained hide spoiler and she ends up being alone on the island I liked the style it was written in But, sometimes I just thought ok, enough with the description Get to the point now But I feel like this with a lot of authors so I guess that s just my problem I didn t like, however, the way it was written Sometimes it felt as if the author was undecided and confused about which perspective she was writing in This is because when the characters were thinking to themselves, it wasn t written in italics, so it felt like the book was switching narrators from the main character s point of view, to the third person This became confusing and annoying very quickly Besides there being no real plot, I would also like to add 1 Ellie Her issues with her parents became very annoying I felt as if she was being too childish about a situation that happens a lot to a lot of people Thankfully though, there was some character development, so she seemed to grow up a bit at the end.2 The way Ellie and George talked to each other about the island Especially George Sometimes I felt as if it was it was too poetic for teenagers to be talking that way And coming from a teenager herself me , it did not seem realistic enough I get it, they re in awe if the island But, I don t know anyone who burts out talking like they re writing a piece of description of a setting in a book I probably didn t explain this well enough Oh well.3 Ellie After about only a couple of days of being alone on the island, she s already talking to herself Really She couldn t hold on for a week without cracking 4 The ghost I thought this was going to be a ghost mystery novel But, nothing properly happened with the ghost until the last 50 to 100 pages And it wasn t even interesting to be honest I didn t get why, if the ghost needed help, she didn t just ask all the other people who came to the island before Ellie.5 I seriously thought there was going to be something going on with George and Ellie And I would not have minded, especially in this book A nice sub plot would have been great, other than just about Ellie s paintings and the colours she was going to use to paint them. This book actually had a lot of potential But nothing really happened in it Hopefully I ll be able to sell this book or return it to get my money back It wasn t worth it But, I m not saying don t read it It just wasn t for me Maybe other people would like it Although aimed at Young Adults, I enjoyed this book very much at the age of 67 I thought I should check it out before passing it onto my granddaughters, but once I d started reading I couldn t put the book down There were parts that sent shivers running up and down my spine, but I should have known that you can always trust Berlie Doherty to produce a positive and hopeful ending The story of a rather troubled, but resourceful teenage girl who accidently becomes isolated on an The story of a rather troubled, but resourceful teenage girl who accidently becomes isolated on an Scottish island contains wonderfully vivid descriptions and evokes a powerful sense of place But A COMPANY OF GHOSTS is also a very modern story and it made me reflect once again on the true priorities in life
